The review procedure

All articles received by the editorial board of Etnografia are subjected to thorough scientific expertise. The journal uses the double-blind peer-review procedure. Each piece should receive positive reviews from at least two experts, of whom one is external. The editorial team selects peer reviewers among leading Russian and international scholars who have published on the paper's subject matter during the last three years. The editorial board determines if the article matches the journal's profile and follows the submission guidelines, and then sends it to the reviewers. The editorial team sends copies of the reviews to the author to notify acceptance, rejection, or a need for revision. The editor-in-chief and the editorial board exercise the right to make the final decision on publication. The timeline for the review process depends on several factors, including the journal's current portfolio, how long it takes the reviewers to complete the reviews, etc.

A typical peer review should address the following criteria:

How original is the paper? Are the ideas presented new or creative?
How methodologically sound is the article?
How representative is its source base?
Is the argument of the article clear and coherent?
Is the work of others adequately cited?
Does the article introduce new fieldwork material, archival, or museum sources to the readership?
Does the author demonstrate basic composition skills? How readable is the paper?
Is the research appropriate for the journal?

The original copies of the reviews are kept in the publisher's archive for five years. The editorial team is required to submit copies of reviews to the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation upon its request.
