ABSTRACT. This article is dedicated to the remarkable life and work of Lev Pavlovich Lashuk (1925–1990), a renowned ethnologist and prominent scholar of the Russian North. A graduate of the Department of Ethnography (now Ethnology) at Lomonosov Moscow State University, Lashuk devoted thirty years of his career to this institution. The author reflects on Lashuk not only as a teacher and academic advisor, but also as a scientist and a person. Lashuk’s early research focused on the ethnic history of the peoples of Russia’s European North. After a decade of work at the Komi Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, he pioneered a comprehensive new approach to ethnic history, one that incorporated a variety of sources. Upon returning to Moscow, he continued his teaching and research at Moscow State University. The academic environment of the Department of Ethnography played a key role in shaping his intellectual development and pedagogical style. Over time, Lashuk’s scholarly interests broadened. Within the framework of Marxist theory, he developed a historical and sociological approach to understanding the ethnocultural dynamics of the late Soviet period, proposing that ethnicity should be examined through the lens of social processes. As a teacher, Lashuk was known for his original thinking, engaging lecture style, and thought-provoking presentations. He stood out among his peers for his wide-ranging knowledge, deep insight into complex issues, and innovative interpretations of ethnological topics. His lectures consistently captivated students, whose academic success he actively supported. Lashuk also founded his own scientific school, whose alumni include many distinguished ethnologists working today.
