ABSTRACT. The article analyzes the history of studying the ethnicities of the Ural-Volga region by the Department of Ethnography (now Ethnology) of the M. V. Lomonosov Moscow State University in the course of its research and teaching activities. The department’s founders — the first generation of professors — created a training system of ethnologists that combined mandatory courses with a detailed study of a particular region. Regional materials were studied in the form of student expeditionary practice. Among the first generation of professors, N. N. Cheboksarov studied the peoples of the Urals and the European North of the country. However, it was mainly the “second generation” of professors who contributed the most to the study of this topic, namely professors K. I. Kozlova, L. P. Lashuk, and V. V. Pimenov. The approach developed by them (each of the named researchers — on their own material) is based on understanding the nature of ethnos as a complex social phenomenon, the development of which is determined not only by ethnic factors. Their work in the field of Finno-Ugric studies, and also of the Turkic-speaking peoples of the Volga region and the Urals, significantly impacted Russian ethnography. The traditions established by these scholars have been continued and developed by their students, among whom many are now leading ethnologists of the country.
