ABSTRACT. The paper explores the academic journey of the well-known Siberian ethnographer, Doctor of historical sciences I. N. Gemuev (1942–2005). The article provides the readers with Gemuev’s brief biography and surveys the main routes of Gemuev’s research expeditions: territories populated by the Selkups, the Nenets, the Khanty, and the Mansi. At the beginning of his scientific career, Gemuev examined the social structures within the Selkup society, particularly the evolution of family and family rituals among the Selkups. His primary scholarly contribution was the study of the religious worldview and ritual practice of the Mansi, including his classification of Mansi’s sanctuaries, identifying its different categories, including home sanctuaries (the House and the Cosmos), and developing the concept of “Ugric Mithraism” through the cult of Mir-susne-khum. Gemuev classified the Mansi sacred places chronologically into natural objects and creations of human hands. He grouped the places of worship into local, regional (including places for worshiping the ancestor-patron of the village, women’s places of worship, and places of worship for the water elements), religious sites of the territorial group, and “memorable places”. Gemuev was the first to introduce into science the phenomenon of a “family (family name) sanctuary” and described the three-member division of a Mansi dwelling in the vertical and horizontal planes. Gemuev devoted many of his works to comparing the Aryan Mithra cult and the Ugric cult of Mir-susne-khum. He also explained the scheme for sequential manufacturing of sacrificial bedspreads among the Mansi. Gemuev’s published works include more than 70 monographs and scientific articles. The researcher is one of the outstanding Russian ethnographers who have made an invaluable contribution to studying the social organization nd worldview of the Samoyed and Ugric peoples.
