ABSTRACT. The article discusses prohibitions in traditional and modern Chuvash holiday ritual calendars and their changeability (or stability) factors in the transformation process. The purpose of the research is to determine the role of prohibitions in regulating the Chuvash behavior within the framework of their festive and ceremonial calendar and its transformation in modern culture. The work is based mainly on the authors’ original field materials. The study showed that bans on calendar customs and rituals of the Chuvash determined the place, time, and procedure of the ceremonies and regulated the participants’ behavior. Socio-cultural transformations of the 20th – the early 21st century have significantly affected their preservation and functionality. Over time, the number of prohibitive norms significantly decreased, and their observance was no longer obligatory for the entire society. The disappearance of prohibitions is associated with breaking down barriers between everyday life and holiday/ritual (i.e., between the profane and the sacred) in the perception of space, time, the functionality of objects, and participants’ behavior. The relaxation or non-observance of prohibitions also resulted from changes in everyday life, household activities, employment patterns, and life rhythms. The breaking of prohibitions attests to weakening or lack of cultural transfer between generations. Overall, changes in the system of religious bans are part of the larger process of transformation of ethnic culture in the context of globalization, the loss of one of its fundamental functions – regulating interaction within the community and with the outside world.
