ABSTRACT. The author discusses the phenomenon of neighborhood, looking into the functioning of neighbors’ relations in the case of an old quarter in Bamberg where she conducted research during a year and a half. The data collected are compared to those of the interviews and observations made in the other quarters of the same city during the same period. The study is based on the field materials collected by the author in Bamberg during her stationary research in 2008–2010, as well as on the internet sources, publications and websites devoted to Sand, its festivals and citizen initiatives in 2017–2019. The article focuses on the interactions in the neighborhood union of the quarter of Sand, analyzing the motives of neighborhood festivals in Bamberg, especially that of Sandkerwa ― a supra-regional event originating in a one-street neighborhood festival. The period when the interviews and observations were conducted is representative for the study of the phenomenon of neighborhood and interactions in the quarter, since 2006–2009 saw the turning period of renovation of the quarter and its central street Sandstrasse and the appearance of new initiative unions and projects, which are nowadays established, as well as of a number of school and social initiatives oriented to the restoration and revival of the neighborhood. The article suggests an analysis of how the new initiatives cooperated and conformed to the traditional neighborhood communities and organizations of Sand, and how they faced the contending interests and counteraction of the inhabitants of the quarter.
