АННОТАЦИЯ. В статье рассматривается процесс перехода от простого общества к сложному (то есть имеющему надобщинные уровни социально-политической организации) у народа бини, проживающего в Западной Африке, на юго-западе современной Нигерии. На основе изучения источников разных видов — археологических, этнографических и др. — показано, что этот процесс протекал в основном во второй половине I тыс. н. э., был стимулирован распространением у бини земледелия и железа и связан с их борьбой за ресурсы, в частности, с эфа — первопоселенцами на землях, занятых бини в результате миграций в I тыс. до н. э. Формой, в которой у бини образовалось сложное общество, стало вождество — объединение нескольких локальных общин под властью верховного вождя. Дальнейшее усложнение социально-политической организации бини привело к появлению, вероятно, в XIII в. королевства Бенин. При этом подчеркивается, что на всем протяжении истории усложнение социально-политической организации бини проходило путем воспроизведения на более высоких уровнях матрицы субстратного для их общества института — большесемейной общины. На примере бини в статье рассматриваются такие общие вопросы, важные для изучения процессов образования, трансформации и функционирования сложных обществ в Африке и за ее пределами, как соотношение в них военного и мирного компонентов, профанной и сакральной, индивидуальной и коллективной власти.
