АННОТАЦИЯ. В статье обсуждается социальная стратификация мальдивского общества. Задача работы — дать обзор основных фактов, предположительно свидетельствующих о некогда существовавшей более сложной структуре мальдив- ского общества. Особое внимание уделяется происхождению и эволюции социальных групп ((квази-)каст, или статусных групп) и следам предположительно существовавших ранее кастовых различий в различных сферах — в частности, в поведенческих нормах, антропологии и языковой системе. В статье высказывается предположение, что на Мальдивах можно найти бесспорные следы сложной системы социальной стратификации, в первую очередь — кастовой системы. Лучше всего сохранились статусные группы, предположительно представляющие собой следы низших каст — гиравару (возможно, потомки неиндоарийской народности, населявшей острова до прихода индоарийцев) и равери (сборщики сока кокосовых пальм — также, возможно, потомки доарийского аборигенного населения). В то же время традиционная мальдивская элита, имеющая сложную структуру (отраженную, в частности, в сложной системе степеней вежливости мальдивского языка), вероятно, представляет собой следы высших каст. Более ранние описания Мальдивских о-вов указывают на то, что еще несколько столетий назад мальдивское общество с бóльшим основанием можно было назвать кастовым, чем в настоящее время. То же касается социальной структуры острова Миникой, входящего теперь в состав Индии. В работе показано, что, хотя средние касты в основном исчезли, высшие и низшие касты оказались более устойчивы к эрозии кастовой структуры.
